Joe Broom
McLean, VA native Joe Broom is a euphonium player who lays claim toa number of unique musical accomplishments. Joe is a 2015 United StatesPresidential Scholar in the Arts, the first euphonium player ever selected.He won a seat in the National Symphony Orchestra Youth FellowshipProgram — the first euphonium player in its 35-year history. He wasextended membership to the Friday Morning Music Club when he won theRoss-Roberts Competition making him the first euphonium member ofthis 129-year-old orchestral society. Joe also became the youngestNational YoungArts Week winner in music — selected from more than10,000 applicants. He is the first high school student ever selected tocompete in the Artist Division finals of the International Tuba EuphoniumAssociation solo competition and the first brass musician to earn a BacardiFallon Performing Arts Scholarship — competing with strings, voice, and piano students. He isalso the first high school student selected as a semifinalist in the Artist Division of the FalconeInternational Tuba and Euphonium Festival.He has performed as soloist with the “President’s Own” United States Marine Band and the United States Air Force Band. He has also been a featured soloist on the National Public Radio program, From the Top, where host and concert pianist Christopher O’Riley described him as “an outstanding musician advocate.”Joe infuses music into education and public service. As founder of Chamber Unique (ChU)™, a network of young musicians, he created a performance series for an arts and wellness program serving seniors with neurological conditions. Joe teaches a six-part Saturday workshop he designed for elementary school students. The workshop integrates music, science and math, including the math of rhythm and the physics of sound — turning STEM into STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, ART, & Mathematics). He uses his workshop as a performance opportunity for other young artists he invites as guest musicians.Joe is an active ensemble performer in both band and orchestral settings. He is a member of the acclaimed Capital Wind Symphony. He has performed as a guest member of the United States Army Orchestra and the United States Navy Band. His past ensembles include several National Symphony Orchestra Youth Fellows Chamber groups and Brass of Peace — a training and performance ensemble for gifted high school musicians.He is a graduate of the academically rigorous Thomas Jefferson High School for Science & Technology in Virginia, named the 2015 best high school in the United States by Newsweek Magazine. Joe now attends the University of Michigan on academic and music merit scholarship. He studies with international euphonium soloist and Besson/Buffet AmbassadorSteven Mead and with Fritz Kaenzig who is the Arthur F. Thorn Professor of Tuba & EuphoniumUniversity of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance.
