Shih-Yao Huang
Shih-Yao, Huang was born in Taiwan. At the age of 10, he started learning euphonium. He graduated from Music Department of the National Hsinchu Education University, and then joined the Ministry of National Defense Symphony Orchestra for one year under the wings of Tzu-Yi Hsu and Ray Kao.
Studied abroad in Birmingham Conservatoire, he also learned Euphonium and Baritone under the teachings of Matthew White, David Childs, and Owen Farr. Awards were won as well, including 1st prize of Quarter Contest with Euphoniums-Birmingham Conservatoire. During the study, he also acted as 1st Baritone in Sovereign Brass Band and Birmingham Conservatoire Brass Band.
He then completed the master program in Department of Music at the National Taipei University of the Arts under the teaching of Professor Fu-Hsuan Duan.
He was the founding member of EuTuba euphonium and tuba ensemble, which also created Taiwan Tuba and Euphonium Festival. His ultimate goal is to reach the level of being able to perform euphonium and tuba in Taiwan. Yao, of course, often performs in solo, but he’s cooperated with many orchestras as a solo artist as well. As well as the principal baritone of Golden Hymn Brass Band, principal euphonium of Hermes Wind Orchestra, and euphonium member of Taipei Wind Orchestra & Symphony Band. He’s also often invited as a guest for other orchestras, such as playing bass trumpet in National Symphony Orchestra (Taiwan Philharmonic).
He is currently an Euphonium lecturer at Tainan National University of the Arts, Chinese Culture University and Soochow University.
